چکیده

The physiochemical properties of Nafion 115 and a composite Nafion 115/zirconium phosphate (∼25 wt.%) membranes are compared. The composite membrane takes up more water than Nafion at the same water activity. However, the proton conductivity of the composite membrane is slightly less than that for Nafion 115. Small angle X-ray scattering shows that the hydrophilic phase domains in the composite membrane are spaced further apart than in Nafion 115, and the composite membrane shows less restructuring with water uptake. Despite the lower proton conductivity of the composite membranes they display better fuel cell performance than Nafion 115 when the fuel cell is operated at reduced humidity conditions. It is suggested that the composite membrane has a greater rigidity that accounts for its improved fuel cell performance. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modified CNTs/Nafion composite: The role of sulfonate groups on the performance of prepared proton exchange methanol fuel cell’s membrane

A novel Nafion®-based nanocomposite membrane was synthesized to be applied as direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were coated with a layer of silica and then reacted by chlorosulfonic acid to produce sulfonate-functionalized silicon dioxide coated carbon nanotubes (CNT@SiO2-SO3H). The functionalized CNTs were then introduced to Nafion®, and subsequently, methanol permeab...

An overview of organic/inorganic membranes based on sulfonated poly ether ether ketone for application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Nowadays, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are the most promising green energy conversion devices for portable and stationary applications. Traditionally, these devices were based onperfluoro-sulfonic acid electrolytes membranes, given the commercial name Nafion. Nafion is the mostused electrolyte membrane till now; because of its high electrochemical properties su...

Mechanical Properties of Nafion and Titania/Nafion Composite Membranes for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

Measurements of the mechanical and electrical properties of Nafion and Nafion/titania composite membranes in constrained environments are reported. The elastic and plastic deformation of Nafion-based materials decreases with both the temperature and water content. Nafion/titania composites have slightly higher elastic moduli. The composite membranes exhibit less strain hardening than Nafion. Co...

Selectivity of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Membranes

Sulfonic acid-functionalized polymer electrolyte membranes alternative to Nafion(®) were developed. These were hydrocarbon systems, such as blend sulfonated polyetheretherketone (s-PEEK), new generation perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) systems, and composite zirconium phosphate-PFSA polymers. The membranes varied in terms of composition, equivalent weight, thickness, and filler and were investigat...
